11/2/2009 5:00 pm
Sioux Falls, SD - The University of Sioux Falls volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer team begin their quest for a bid to the national tournament via the Great Plains Athletic Conference playoffs this week.Men’s Soccer
After starting the season 0-5, the Cougars won nine of their last ten matches to finish 10-7-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the conference. USF’s eight game win streak to end the season earned them a bid to host quarterfinal game this Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the USF Sanford Complex against seventh seed Midland Lutheran College (7-8-1 overall, 5-6-1 GPAC).
If USF can repeat the outcome of the first meeting, a 3-1 victory in Fremont, Neb., they would host the winner of the sixth seed Briar Cliff vs. third seed Morningside match. That match would also be played at the USF Sanford Soccer Complex, where the Cougars are 6-1 this season.
Women’s Soccer
The women’s soccer team was picked eighth in the GPAC preseason polls but rose as high as second in the GPAC standings this season. The Cougars sit at 10-7-1 overall, 7-4-1 in the conference and earned the fifth seed for the GPAC tournament. USF will travel to fourth seed Hastings College (12-3-3 overall, 7-2-3 GPAC) in Hastings, Neb., the site of a 3-0 Bronco victory over the Cougars on October 3rd. If USF manages a road win they would play the winner of the eighth seed Concordia and one seed Dakota Wesleyan match.
Volleyball
USF volleyball has surpassed last season’s totals in every category, including three more overall victories and four additional conference wins as compared to last season. USF (18-18 overall, 6-10 GPAC) won three in a row to end the regular season and will host for the first time under head coach Lisa Mathes-Peters. The Cougars, who earned the eighth seed, will need to play a great match against ninth seed Midland Lutheran (8-17 overall, 4-12 GPAC). The Warriors defeated USF in three sets on October 24 in Fremont. If USF is victorious in their quarterfinal match, they would travel to Orange City, Iowa to face Northwestern, the no. 1 seed in the tournament and no. 3 in the latest NAIA polls.
