Men’s Soccer Defeated by Strong-Willed Warriors in First Round of Playoffs

11/3/2009 10:56 pm

Sioux Falls, SD - With the No. 2 seed in the Great Plains Athletic Conference playoffs and their largest home crowd of the year, the University of Sioux Falls lost 2-1 to No. 7 seed Midland Lutheran (8-8-1 overall, 6-6 GPAC).

The Cougars controlled the first half fairly well as they outshot the Warriors 9-3 and kept the ball in Midland Lutheran territory for most of the half. Senior Ryan Trupe (Rapid City, S.D.) scored the first goal of the match at the 29 minute mark. Trupe’s second goal of the season gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.

The Warriors managed to move the ball down the field and create a few opportunities at the end of the half as Mark McKeekin capitalized at the 40 minute mark with a goal to knot the match at 1-1.

The second half was more balanced between the teams as USF and Midland Lutheran had equal shots and ball possession, but neither team was able to score. Senior goalkeeper Patrick Purdy (Grand Island, Neb.) made two great saves that could have been Warrior scores. The defensive play by both teams forced overtime.

The first three minutes of the overtime period did not prove fruitful as both teams did not record a shot. Then Midland Lutheran’s Jake Corum was able to place cross-over pass from the right side of the field to fellow Warrior Rob Capewell on the left side. Capewell knocked the ball in to win the match and advance his team to the next round of the GPAC tournament.

The loss ends a USF eight match win streak and the Cougar’s season.
