Cougar Men Win Home Opener Against Trojans


Matt Malloy scored 27 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in the victory over DSU.

Sioux Falls, SD - In their 2009 home opener, the No. 23 ranked University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball team (1-1) defeated Dakota State University (1-1) 63-47 on Friday night at the Stewart Center.


Junior Matt Malloy (Parkston, S.D.) scored a career-high 27 points, while going 9-18 from the floor and 7-10 from the free-throw line.


With 6:07 to play in the first half the Trojans led 18-16 but USF held DSU without a point for the next 4:27, while scoring 13 point of their own to take a 29-18 lead. The Cougars held the lead at halftime 32-23.


During the first 4:13 of the second half the Cougars scored 12 points and once again held the Trojans scoreless. The 12-0 run gave USF their largest lead of the contest, 45-23. For the remainder of the game, the Cougars were able to maintain their advantage and ended up with the 16 point victory.


For the game, USF shot 38.2 percent (21-55) while outrebounding DSU 47-34.
Next up for the Cougar men is a rematch with Mayville State University, who defeated the Cougars 70-67 last Saturday in Mayville, N.D. Tip-off will be tomorrow night, November 7, beginning at 6:00 p.m. in the Stewart Center.
