USF Cougars Conquer KWU Coyotes
11/13/2009 7:20 pm
Sioux Falls, SD - The University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball defeated Kansas Wesleyan University (2-3) at the Pizza Ranch Classic at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. The Cougars never trailed the Coyotes in a 79-68 conquer of KWU.Junior forward Kelley Hubbard (Carson, Calif.) stormed through the first 5 and half minutes, scoring nine points to help USF to a 12-6 lead. After a timeout, KWU went on a 4-0 run to pull within two points at 12-10, turning out to be one of two situations in which the Coyotes were within two points of tying USF.
USF responded with back to back threes by junior guard Matt Malloy (Parkston, S.D.) and senior guard Thomas Frames (Los Angeles, Calif.). Malloy was three for six beyond the arch on the day.
A great mid-air athletic steal and ensuing break-away layup by Malloy coupled with two straight successful jump shots by junior center De’Shawn Howard (Tucson, AZ) led the way to a 29-20 advantage for the Cougars. Howard had his best game of the season, falling one rebound short of a double-double. Howard had nine rebounds, two assists, one steal while scoring a season-high 13 points.
KWU was able to go on a 5-0 run in the last two minutes of the half to pull within three points, but a successful three point shot by senior forward Cedric Seefeldt (Clark, S.D.) and a jumper from the free throw line as time expired by Frames gave USF a 38-30 lead at halftime.
The second half had the same tempo as the first half, with KWU closing the gap to within a possession, but USF found an answer each time.
KWU’s Matthew Dickson hit a three right off in their first possession and was able to close the eight point lead as USF did not score their first points of the half until the 17:05 mark. A charging Coyote team pulled within three points, and off a steal it looked as though a tie may be in store, but a retaliation steal and two point conversion by junior guard Ronnell Grant (Tucson, AZ) allowed the Cougars to maintain a lead.
An 8-0 surge would build USF another substantial lead that they would be able to maintain until the end of the game. USF went five for six from the charity line down the stretch and was aided by several missed free throw attempts by the Coyotes. The victory moves their record to 4-1 on the season.
The Cougars will continue play at Northwestern College tomorrow with a game against Grace University at 12:00 p.m. The men's and women's game will streamed live on the Northwestern website.
