USF Wrestling Competes at DWU Tournament

Sioux Falls, SD - The USF wrestling team traveled to Mitchell, S.D. this past Saturday for the DWU open tournament. 18 teams with around 250 wrestlers attended including all the GPAC teams with wrestling, Dickinson State University, Jamestown College, Augustana College (S.D.), and Northern State University to name a few.The Cougars had another strong performance, improving off of last week’s competition and putting together good performances that led to wins.
The Cougars were led by redshirt Brandon Goodwin (Lawrence, KS) who finished the day 3-3 with a 6th place finish at the 125lb weight class. USF’s other competitor at 125lbs was Doug Thompson (Kimball S.D.) who finished the day 2-2. Thompson won by fall over Jordan McGuirein of Baker University in his first match, then lost by fall to Matt Chustz of William Penn, but came back to take a 9-3 decision over Alan Stuber of DWU. Thompson lost his final match in a 13-5 major decision to Angelo Quintana of Northwestern.
At 157lbs Koln Fink (Harrisburg S.D.) started the day with a 9-3 decision over Gaelan Malloy of University of Regina, then lost to Brandon Roehrich of Jamestown College, but pinned Dana College’s Cody Carrillo in 2:00 minutes in a huge win. Fink lost by tech fall to Josh Swansen of William Penn to end his day at 2-2.
The Cougars had three wrestlers competing in the 197lb weight class, Clint Whitley (Sioux Falls S.D.), Joe Skow (Jackson, Minn.), and Casey Finnicum (Lynnwood Wash.), The trio combined for a 2-2 finish. Whitley started the day with a 7-4 decision over Jason Schweer of Baker University, and then beat Brian Lunde of University of Regina by a 11-2 major decision. He then lost his quarter finals match to eventual runner up Joe Lockett of Morningside College and his wrestle back match to Brooks Bowthorpe of Concordia (Neb.) by a 13-4 major decision ending his day.
Finnicum also made the quarter finals by beating Aaron Samuleson of Ridgewater Community College 10-3 in his first round match and then getting a huge win by fall over Nic Leither a 2008-2009 All-American from Northwestern College. He lost his quarter finals match 3-1 in overtime to Karl Spain of William Penn. A injury to Finnicum’s collar bone held him out of the rest of the tournament.
Skow had a close first round win over Josh Boler of Dana College 13-11, then lost to Baker Haar of Northern State 6-2, came back and beat Jason Schweer of Baker University, by fall and finally lost in three overtime periods by decision 7-5 to Evan Stock of Ridgewater CC to end his day.
Other wrestlers to win a match for the Cougars were Tyler Reibsamen at 165lbs, and Andrew Harmoney at heavyweight.
The Cougars next competition will be their home opener this Tuesday November 17, against Minnesota State University Moorhead and Morningside College. Wrestling will begin at 5:00pm against Moorhead, then Moorhead and Morningside will wrestle and then the Cougars will take on Morningside.
