11/16/2009 3:44 pm

Sioux Falls, SD - University of Sioux Falls quarterback Lorenzo Brown, defensive back Dan Schmeichel and kicker/punter Braden Wieking gave the Cougars a sweep of the Hauff Mid-America Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference weekly honors, as announced by the conference office Monday.

All three played an instrumental part in No. 1 USF’s 49-21 victory over No. 4 Morningside College (9-1 overall, 9-1 GPAC). The win gave USF their fourth consecutive conference crown and allowed USF to stay No. 1 in the NAIA polls for the entire regular season.

Senior quarterback Lorenzo Brown (Bristol, Conn.) had 315 yards of total offense and six touchdowns against the NAIA’s No. 3 rated scoring defense. Brown completed 17 of 26 pass attempts (65%) for 260 yards and four touchdowns and added 55 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. His rushing touchdowns helped seal the game for the Cougars late in the second half.

For the season, Brown has completed 69% of passes attempted for 2,562 yards and 33 touchdowns to only two interceptions. His 203.0 pass efficiency rating leads the nation. Brown is second on the team with 589 rush yards and 13 touchdowns. It is Brown’s second GPAC Player of the Week award this season, earning the honor in a 42-19 win over then-No. 19 Hastings College on September 19.

Junior safety Dan Schmeichel (Odessa, Minn.) totaled five tackles and forced three of the Mustang’s six turnovers of the day. Schmeichel forced a fumble that he recovered and also made two athletic interceptions.

This season Schmeichel has helped the NAIA’s No. 1 ranked defense by making 23 solo stops and 14 assisted tackles. He has 4.5 tackles for a loss, including one sack, and is second on the team with four interceptions. Schmeichel has two pass break ups, six pass deflections, one quarterback hurry, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. It is Schmeichel’s second GPAC Player of the Week honor this season, also earning recognition for his play in a 76-3 victory at Dana College on September 12.

Freshman kicker and punter Braden Wieking (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had one of his best performances of the season in the win over Morningside. Wieking helped win the field position battle by placing one of five punts inside the 20 yard line while averaging a season-best 43.2 yards per punt and hitting a long of 53 yards. Wieking also was seven for seven on point-after-touchdown (PAT) attempts.

In his first ever season of football Wieking is averaging 36.6 yards per punt, including three boots over 50 yards. The Sioux Falls Christian graduate has hit six of nine field goal attempts, with a long of 32 yards and made a school record 78 of 79 PATs during the Cougar’s 11 regular season contests. It is Wieking’s second GPAC Player of the Week honor, as he was noted for his play in a 64-0 win over Doane College on October 3rd.

USF will play No. 14 Minot State University (8-2) on Saturday, November 21st at the USF Sanford Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and tickets are now available.
