Sioux Falls, SD - University of Sioux Falls head baseball coach Matt Guiliano is nearing the completion of the 2010-2011 recruiting class with the addition of two more California natives, Andrew Christensen and Corey Vasquez.Christensen will join USF after a redshirt season at Citrus College in Glendora, Calif. While at Citrus, the 5’8, 180 .lbs left hand pitcher played in the O’Kieki Spring Wood Bat League, recording 49 strikeouts, 13 walks, a 1.97 ERA and 26 hits surrendered in 39 innings pitched.
“Andrew is exactly what we were looking for in a pitcher” Guiliano said. “We wanted to go out and find a lefty you could mix up pitches well and throw them all for strikes in any given count.”
Christensen is a native of Rowland Heights, Calif., and graduated from Diamond Bar High School, where he earned Deans Lists mention three years.
“I am excited to get Andrew here in the fall and see him compete for a top spot on the rotation.”
Vasquez will rejoin the program after playing for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009. During his freshman year at USF, Vasquez held a .308 batting average, started 39 games, hit seven doubles and posted a .983 fielding percentage. Vasquez is a 5’8, 170 lbs. catcher originally from Ramona, Calif.
“Corey knows our system, he knows what to expect from us, he fits in great, will give us great depth and experience behind the plate and another great bat in the order” Guiliano said.
Vasquez transferred to San Diego City College after his freshman year, where he led the Knights with a .385 batting average. He tallied 52 hits, 32 runs, nine doubles, one triple and was seven of 10 on stolen base attempts in 35 starts during the 2010 season. Vasquez teamed with fellow USF commit Kevin Santos to help SDCC to a 27-9 overall record that earned a Pacific Coast Conference Championship.
“I am extremely excited to have Corey commit and decide to come back to USF” Guiliano added. “He will be able to step right in and help us out.”
