Records Continue to Fall for USF Track & Field

The USF track and field team had athletes competing at the Bill Hillenbrand Alumni Meet in Vermillion, S.D. and at the BVU Open in Storm Lake, Iowa this weekend.

The Cougars came away with three school records and eleven more provisional qualifying marks.

In Storm Lake, junior Katlyn Sawtelle had an impressive performance in the pentathlon. Competing in her first pentathlon, Sawtelle set a school record with a score of 3,290. This performance beat the previous school record by more than 600 points and is only 10 points off of a provisional qualifying mark. Sawtelle took second place overall, and finished in the top three in each of her five events.

“This performance is impressive considering the fact that this is Katlyn's first ever pentathlon,” said Reid Ehrisman, Director of Track & Field. “With a performance like this, we know that Katlyn will be very competitive in the NSIC multi-events.”

In Vermillion, Jazzelena Black had another stellar performance, setting a school record for the fourth straight meet. Black's record setting effort came in the triple jump where she recorded a leap of 39-10.5 (12.15m), which earned her second place overall.

Black also blew away the competition in the long jump where she won the event by more than a foot with a jump of 18-5.75 (5.63m). Black was followed by Kristen Townley (17-01.25/5.21m), Lindsey Elston (16-9.75/5.12m) and Dani Moyer (16-05/5.00m) who took third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

“Jazzelena continues to exceed our expectations for her,” said Ehrisman. “It's an impressive feat that she has been able to break a school record in every meet that she has competed in.”

In the women's weight throw, Marissa Whipple threw a school record and provisional qualifying mark with a throw of 53-11.75 (16.45m). She tied for second place.

On the men's side, Jordan Bents was the runner-up with a toss of 53-11 (16.43) which is the second furthest throw in this event in USF history.

“I was really proud of how well our throwers performed today,” said Ehrisman. “It's always great to be able to see a school record and many PR's fall in a meet.”

Billy Brockmueller ran a 4:19.24 on his way to a second place finish in the one mile run, and he was closely followed by his brother, Bobby Brockmueller, who placed third overall with a time of 4:19.72

Billy's mark stands as the second fastest mile in school history.

“It was great to see Bobby back on the track and competing well, even after dealing with injuries in the early part of the season,” said Ehrisman.

In the men's pole vault, Scott Greenman took third place with a vault of 15-11 (4.85m). Senior Andrew Ellsworth took fourth with a vault of 15-5 (4.70m).

In the women's 60m dash, Dani Moyer took third place with a time of 8.08. DeAndra Richardson finished fourth overall with a time of 8.17.

Brigitte Gross placed third overall in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.19.

Erik Albeck (8.51) and Ryan Maloney (8.52) took third and fourth place respectively in the 60m hurdles. Albeck's time moves him up to sixth place on the USF Top Ten Charts.
