Defense Takes Spring Scrimmage at the Bob, 34-23

The defense grabbed an early lead and held off a late second half surge to record a 34-23 victory over the offense, who won the annual University of Sioux Falls football spring scrimmage last season.

This year's scoring format consisted of touchdowns (six points), extra points (one point), and third and fourth down conversions (one point each) for the offensive team who was suited in white.

Defensively, the black team received points for turnovers (four points), sacks (two points), three and outs (two points), and third and fourth down stops (one point each).

The defense applied pressure early and often and for the most part rattled a young offensive line throughout the first half. Following a Raymond Bautista interception and several three and outs, the defense owned a double-digit advantage.

However, the offense began to find confidence in the second half. Splitting time, sophomore Calvin Jacobson and redshirt freshman Corbin Lawler each played a role in the white team's comeback bid.

Jacobson completed the offense's two touchdowns, finding Carrington Hanna on an incredible back-shoulder grab and Garrett Shutt on a 12-yard arrow, while Lawler showed off his speed on a 22-yard scramble for a big first down.

Hanna finished with five catches for 115 yards, including a 64-yard reception in the first half, the longest play of the game.

Tonight also proved the Cougars have several options at tailback. Junior transfer Nephi Garcia demonstrated his ability to make people miss with a 40-yard scamper, while redshirt freshman Brady Rose showed off his strength and potential with a 45-yard run of his own in the third quarter.

Redshirt freshmen Trey Naasz and Josh Angulo also turned some heads at receiver today.

Defensively, Solomon St. Pierre made some key plays in coverage, while Carter Ahlers and Jonathan Talbot provided strong run support from the second level.

Another major area of concern heading into the year for USF was who would fill the void of All-American kicker/punter Braden Wieking's departure. Redshirt kicker Alex Aesoph was consistent in his efforts, as he went 2-of-2 in field goal attempts, and converted his lone extra point try.

USF will wrap up spring practice early next week.  The Cougars open the 2013 season Saturday, September 7 at the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
