Cougar Basketball Signs Shelby Hemmann

University of Sioux Falls head women's basketball coach Travis Traphagen announced that Shelby Hemmann signed a national letter of intent with USF Monday and will join the Cougars' program this fall.

“Shelby is a great addition to the Cougar Family,” said coach Traphagen. “She had a great year at McCook and we are fortunate to have her for the next three years.”

Hemmann, a 6-0 forward, joins USF after playing one season at McCook Community College (Neb.), where she averaged 15.4 points and a team best, 7.8 rebounds as a true freshman last season. A first-team All-NCCAC selection, Hemmann posted double-digit scoring in 11 of the final 13 games, including a career-high 35 points to lift the Indians to a 91-90 victory at Central Community College-Columbus.

Shelby“She's a post-type player that can really space the floor with her ability to shoot the three, post up and run the floor,” added Traphagen. “We expect Shelby to come in and contribute right away at USF.”

Hemmann also displayed her scoring power against Northwest Kansas Technical when she went 12-of-13 from the field and 4-of-5 at the line en route to a 29-point performance. The Amherst, Neb. native finished her outstanding freshman debut with a total of eight games with 20 points or more, while shooting 50 percent from the floor, and 33 percent from the three-point line.

“We are very excited about the addition of Shelby, and this entire recruiting class,” Traphagen said. “We've signed a great group of young ladies, and we're really looking forward to next season.”

The Cougar women's basketball 2013 class now consists of six student-athletes, a balanced group that features three guards and three post players.

Brynn Flakus, Alyson Johnsen, Samantha Knecht and Katelyn Rushton each signed during the early period in February, while USF announced the signing of former Colorado State guard Taylor Varsho a little more than a week ago.
