Rutherford Places 11th at Central Super Regional

Sioux Falls' sophomore Tavia Rutherford shot a 86 in the final round of the 2013 NCAA Division II Women's Golf Central Regional Championship Wednesday at St. Joseph Country Club. Her three-day total came to 243 which was good for an 11th place finish.

Rutherford (78-79-86), who was seeded No. 3 of four individual players invited to the Super Regional, finished as the top individual invite and just missed a trip to the National Tournament as she was four strokes short of the qualifying mark (239).

Coach Coluccio and TaviaThe Bakersfield, Calif. native spoke about her experience. “Competing in the regional tournament was an amazing experience,” said Rutherford. “I'm fortunate to have had the opportunity to qualify as individual and represent USF in our first year of eligibility.”

Rutherford was the first women's golfer since 2009 to represent USF in regional play.

“Three rounds in three days was also a great experience for me. I know I still have some things to work on, but I'm really looking forward to next season and what my future holds,” added Rutherford.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with a team from each super regional advanced to the championships. Rutherford finished fifth among the top players on a non-qualifying team.

Central Oklahoma, Augustana and Northeastern State each advanced to the championships. As a team, Central Oklahoma (951) fired their lowest round of the tournament Wednesday to secure a regional title. Augustana (964) finished second in the team standings, while Northeastern State (975) placed third.

Rutherford's outstanding sophomore campaign was highlighted by back-to-back top-15 post-season finishes at the NSIC Championship and the Central Super Regional. In 11 appearances, she boasts seven top-10 finishes in 2012-13.
