What you need to know about Upper Iowa

Smith, Jaeschke lead the offense

After a 5-0 start to the season, Upper Iowa has suffered three straight losses before righting the ship last weekend with a dominating win over Wayne State. Leading the way for the Peacocks (6-3) is senior quarterback Cole Jaeschke who is averaging over 300 yards passing and two touchdowns per game. Leading rusher Chris Smith was lost for two games due to injury, but the senior retuned last week to total 148 yards and three scores. As a whole, UIU ranks in the top half of the conference, scoring 38.2 points per game while allowing 28.6 points per contest. Senior quarterback Cole Jaeschke is putting together an impressive campaign in 2014, his final year as the focal point of the UIU offense. In nine games this season, Jaeschke is nearing 3,000 yards passing and has tossed 18 touchdowns. Against Concordia-St. Paul two weeks ago, Jaeschke threw for 445 yards and added four touchdowns in last week's win over Wayne State. Pairing well with his quarterback, senior running back Chris Smith's spectacular season was slightly derailed due to injury, but he has returned to his top-rushing ways. In every game he has played in this season, Smith has rushed for over 100 yards, tataling 1,089 in just seven games. Smith also has a nose for the end zone, reaching pay dirt 19 times in 2014. In consecutive wins over Bemidji State and St. Cloud State, Smith amassed over 200 yards in each game and scored three touchdowns in each.

 Shea leads Peacocks

Upper Iowa head coach Tom Shea is in his sixth season at the helm of the Peacock football team. In his tenure, UIU owns a 22-43 record, but the Peacocks are guaranteed a winning record in 2014 for the first time during his stay in Fayette. Previous head coaching stops for Shea included Dakota State and Peru State where he won an NAIA Division II national title in 1990. Overall, Shea owns a 108-84-3 record in his 19 years of coaching.
