MANKATO, Minn. - Opening postseason competition for University of Sioux Falls Track & Field,
Teddy Frid and
Justine Zylstra completed the first day of the NSIC Multi-Event Championships on Sunday, May 1. Frid sits seventh after the first five events of the men's decathlon and Zylstra is 12th after four events of the women's heptathlon.
Frid amassed 3310 points in his first five events, competing in the first decathlon of his collegiate career. Frid opened with the sixth-fastest 100-meter dash time, clocking a 11.50-second sprint to earn 748 points. The South St. Paul, Minn. native followed that with a 6.13-meter (20 feet-1.50 inches) leap in the long jump to add 615 points.
In his third event of the day, Frid recorded a 10.23-meter (33-6.75) mark in the shot put, 10th-best in the competition, adding 499 points to his total. In the high jump, Frid cleared five bars, making 1.88 meters (6-2.00) on his third attempt, to tie for fifth in the event and score 696 points. With a 51.38-second time in the 400-meter dash, Frid moved into the top eight with 752 points, arriving at his 3310-point total.
Frid's mark already has him ranked sixth on USF's all-time top 10 list and he is just 2,313 points from breaking the record. He resumes competition on Monday with the 110-meter hurdles, an event in which he ranks fourth all-time at USF, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.
Zylstra is also already in sixth on the USF all-time top 10 list with her first-day total and she is within striking distance of the top five with her 2312 day-one point total. She opened the day with a personal-best in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a 15.65-second time worth 791 points with the ninth-fastest time in the competition.
In the high jump, Zylstra made three bars, clearing 1.39 meters (4-6.75) on her second attempt to add 502 points to her score. The Canton, S.D. native registered an 8.94-meter (29-4.00) mark in the shot put, moving her score up 460 points. Finishing the first day, Zylstra turned in a 28.50-second 200-meter dash time worth 592 points to arrive at her 2312 total on day one.
Zylstra looks to move up the NSIC Heptathlon standings and USF charts on day two beginning with the long jump -- she owns the No. 6 mark in the triple jump -- then finish with the javelin and 800-meter run Monday morning.
