Burnsville, Minn.- The University of Sioux Falls women's soccer team, led by sixth year head coach Mekonnen Afa, was picked to finish fourteenth in the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Poll, as announced today by the league office.
Defending conference champion Minnesota State University, Mankato was selected by the league’s coaches to win the NSIC in the preseason poll for the third time in the past five years.
The Mavericks received 11 first place votes and tallied 221 points, ranking them nine points ahead of Winona State (212), who received the other five first place votes. Minnesota Duluth was ranked third (191), St. Cloud State fourth (166) followed by Augustana in fifth place (165). Ranked sixth through tenth were Bemidji State (151), University of Mary (148), Upper Iowa (129), Concordia-St. Paul (118) and Minot State (99). The Cougars return 14 starters from a 2011 team that finished with an 8-9-1 record. USF swept its final homestand (Minot State, University of Winnipeg) of 2011 to finish with at least seven wins for the third consecutive season.
Sophomore midfielder Desiree Parmenter will lead the Cougar attack after a freshman campaign that saw her finish second on the team in points (15) and goals (6). Junior keeper Samantha Maybon returns after splitting time between the pipes last season. The Omaha native hauled in 94 saves (.734) for a 2.42 goals against average last season.
Parmenter and senior defender and Sioux Falls Roosevelt product Micole Jones
were picked as USF’s “NSIC Players to Watch.”
USF will host an exhibition game against Dordt College on Aug. 22 at 5 p.m., before opening its first-ever NSIC season at home against Augustana College on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
The 2012 NSIC Soccer Regular Season Champion will be determined by a 15-game league schedule, with a win earning a team three points and a tie one point.
