Tennis Picks Up 7-2 Win at Buena Vista

The Cougars swept doubles' play then used impressive performances in singles by Rachel Hussey, Stacey Beard, Emily Erickson and Morgan DeLange to cruise to a 7-2 dual match victory over Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa.

USF is now 1-0 this season.  

“The girls played very well and we dominated in doubles to get the match off to a good start,” eighth-year head coach Kevin Grebin said. “We had strong and consistent play from Hussey, Erickson and DeLange.”

In No. 1 singles, Hussey defeated Haley Henrichs 6-2, 6-0 and in the No. 2 slot, freshman Stacey Beard notched a three-set victory (4-6, 7-6 (1), 10-8) against Beaver Liz Heffernan for her second win of the fall.

Freshman Emily Erickson cruised to her second singles' victory of the season as she won 6-2, 6-1 against Tasha Nelson in No.3 singles. Sophomore Morgan DeLange followed with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win of her own over BVU’s Amanda Kavan. At No. 5 singles, redshirt junior Molly Seigenthaler dropped a three-set match to Kassidy Ipsen, 4-6, 7-6, 10-4. Junior Julia Iversen fell to Samantha Kavan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles match.

The #1 doubles tandem of Beard and Erickson were the first players off the court with an 8-3 victory against Henrichs and Nelson. Hussey and Seigenthaler combined to defeat Heffernan and Kroepel, 8-3 in No. 2 doubles before DeLange and Iversen posted an identical 8-3 win in No. 3 doubles action.

“I was very impressed with Stacey Beard, who stayed focused and won a tough three set match,” he added. “Seigenthaler also played a tough three set match, but dropped a couple of key points in the tie-breaker and lost.”
