Cougars Set Eyes on NCAA Championships

Six Sioux Falls track and field student-athletes will be competing at the 2013 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Pueblo, Colo. Hosted by Colorado State at Pueblo, action begins  May 23-25, at the Neta & Eddie DeRose Thunderbowl. The top eight individuals in each event will earn All-America status. Of USF's six participants, four are seeded eight or higher for this weekend’s competition. All six selections competed at the indoor national championships and have earned USTFCCCA All-Region and NSIC all-conference honors twice this year.

Jagger Gran (PV, Fr., Shoreview, Minn.): Placed 10th at the indoor championships…finished second at the NSIC Outdoor Championships...won indoor conference title en route to being named Newcomer of the Year for indoor…seeded 16th with mark of 16-4.75 heading into this weekend

Scott Greenman (PV, Fr., Clovis, Calif.): Finished 11th at the indoor national meet…claimed the NSIC Outdoor title with a program-best mark of 16-8-75…also named Newcomer of the Year for outdoor… earned No.8seed for this weekend

Jazzelena Black (LJ/TJ, Fr., Oxnard, Calif.): Earned All-American honors at the indoor championships, where she placed fifth in the long jump…USF’s lone non-vaulter invited to the outdoor championships… also the only student-athlete invited for two events...picked up her second-straight NSIC title in the women’s long jump May 11…enters the championships ranked 13th (19-6.75) in the long jump and 12th (40-6) in the triple jump

Kayla Coffee (PV, RSr., Alliance, Neb.): Has qualified for the national championships in each season of her four-year career…including her All-American finish at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships, she has tallied seven All-American performances in seven national championship appearances…claimed the NSIC Outdoor crown May 10 and placed second during the indoor meet…won the women’s pole vault competition at the historic Kansas Relays earlier this year…enters nationals seeded fifth (13-2.25)…PR is 13-7.25 

Brigitte Gross (PV, RJr., Alexandria, S.D.): Making her fifth appearance in a collegiate national championship meet…achieved All-American status with a fourth place finish at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships…tallied a pair of national championships during USF’s affiliation with the NAIA…was the NSIC Indoor pole vault champion and placed second at the outdoor meet…two-time conference field athlete of the week…school record mark of 13-5.75 earned her the No. 4 seed, the highest of any USF selections…owns PR of 13-7

Kristin Majerus (PV, Sr., Holdrege,  Neb.): Clinched her fourth ticket to the a national meet…just missed All-American plaudits at the 2013 Indoor Championships, where she placed 9th…claimed third at the NSIC Outdoor Championships and fourth during indoor…seeded 8th with a mark of 12-11.75…holds PR of 13-1

Predicting USF’s women will garner 44.83 points at the NCAA Championships, the Cougars received a No. 22 ranking in USTFCCCA’s pre-championships national rankings announced May 20.

The No. 21 rated USF women’s team finished in fourth place at the NSIC Conference Championships, earning 90 points, while the men’s team also finished in fourth place, scoring 111 points. USF ended the two-day meet with 40 all-conference honorees, seven school records, four conference titles, and five conference runner-up honors.

Jazzelena Black, Kayla Coffee and Brigitte Gross each placed in the top eight of their respective events to earn All-American status on day two of the NCAA DII Indoor Championships.

On the women's side, the No.11 Cougars tallied 12 team points, which tied Findlay for 13th in the team standings.
