The USF Softball team opened up their 2014 Spring Break trip by sweeping their opening day games against Slippery Rock and Mercy College winning 8-0 and 7-6 respectively. With the wins, the Cougars improve to 7-3 on the season and Amanda Walters claimed her 4th and 5th wins of the year as she also recorded 13 strikeouts in the two victories.

USF 8, Slippery Rock 0 (6 Innings)
Amanda Walters pitched a one-hit gem in USF's first game on their Spring Break trip on Saturday as the Cougars routed Slippery Rock 8-0 before the game was called after six innings. Walters ended the game with 11 strikeouts and 4 walks in the Cougars victory.

Shae Hoskins helped pace the Cougars at the plate as she went 2-of-3 (0.666) while scoring two runs and recording 1 RBI.

Taylor Jonas also made the most of her at bats as she went 1-of-2 at the plate, which included a home run which brought in two runs for USF.

As a team the Cougars scored eight runs on 10 hits while recording 7 RBI's. USF also batted a combined 0.385.

USF 7, Mercy College 6 (8 Innings)
USF's second game of the day ended in victory thanks to an amazing fielding effort by Erin Scott. The Cougars ended the game in eight innings with a final score of 7-6.

With the game knotted up in the bottom of the 7th, Mercy College had a runner on third base with only one out and looked to claim the win. However, Erin Scott put that to rest as she made a diving catch right on the line in left field and then her throw to home beat the runner, sending the game into extra innings.

USF went to work early in the 8th inning as a Shannon Daly single advanced Erin Scott to third base. Then with one out on the board, a Taylor Jonas ground out to Shortstop brought home Erin Scott to give the Cougars the lead.

The bottom of the 8th belonged to the Cougars as they sent the Slippery Rock batters out in order to come away with the win.

USF scored their 7 runs off of 11 hits and 4 RBI's as they notched their second victory of the day.

The Cougars will return to action for the second day of their trip on Sunday when they face Merrimack College and Ursuline College with games slated for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
