Cougars Win Sixth Straight Game
USF 8, Merrimack College 0
After a slow start, the Cougars scored seven runs in four innings as they claimed the shutout victory over Merrimack College. Amanda Walters (6-2) led the Cougars charge from the mound as she recorded eight strikeouts and no earned runs in seven innings of action.
After taking a 1-0 lead into the 4th inning, USF's Kellen Dewey hit a single to centerfield that brought home Betsy Thomas and Bailey Bouman to increase the Cougars lead to three runs. Dewey ended the day going 2-of-3 at the plate scoring one run and bringing in two RBIs.
The Cougars increased their lead yet again when Shannon Daly sent one the distance as her home run brought home Shae Hoskins and gave USF a 5 run advantage. Daly finished the day going 2-of-3 at the plate scoring two runs and notching two RBIs.
Adding some late insurance runs, a Betsy Thomas line drive home run to left field brought home Shannon Daly and set the Cougars final margin of victory to eight runs. The home run was the second hit of the day for Thomas (2-of-3) as she scored three runs and put up two RBIs.
The Cougars scored their eight runs off of nine hits and seven RBIs.
USF 9, Ursuline College 2
After heading into the bottom of the second inning trailing Ursuline College 2-1, the Cougars scored eight runs unanswered to claim a 9-2 victory. In seven innings of action, Bailey Bouman (2-0) struck out five batters while giving up one earned run.
The Cougars offensive explosion started in the bottom of 2nd inning when a single by Erin Scott brought home Kellen Dewey. At the next at bat, Shannon Daly reached first base on an error which allowed Andrea Sheppard Kauwalu to score giving USF a 3-2 lead.
The scoring carried over into the 3rd inning for USF when a Kellen Dewey double brought home Bailey Bouman. Andrea Sheppard Kauwalu hit a single in the next at bat that resulted in another run when Kellen Dewey advanced to home on the Arrows throw to first to give USF a three-run advantage.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, USF extended their lead when a Shannon Daly single brought home Brooke Setzler. Later in the inning, A Betsy Thomas single to centerfield resulted in Erin Scott advancing home on the Arrows throw. Back-to-back ground outs by Bailey Bouman and Shae Hoskins resulted in runs by Shannon Daly and Betsy Thomas to give the Cougars their final margin of victory. Daly ended the game going 2-of-4 from the plate, scoring one run and notching two RBIs.
The Cougars scored their nine runs on 12 hits and 6 RBIs.
On Monday, the Cougars will face West Chester and Saint Michael's College in day three of their spring break trip. Games are set to begin at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.
