Three Reasons to Attend the USF Relays; (3) The Lillibridge Track
In addition to the unique seeding format and numerous potential records within reach, the 2012 Sioux Falls Relays will be hosted at one of the premier facilities in the region, May 4-5, in the Lillibridge track and field, located in Sioux Falls, S.D. A track that can be best described as a true spectators venue, giving fans on more reason to attend this weekend's festivities.
Completed in 2010, The Lillibridge track & Field is one of three recent additions to the University of Sioux Falls Sports Complex and unlike several collegiate tracks, it was strategically designed as a single sport site.
"You often see tracks that are not necessarily designed with the spectator in mind. When designing the Lillibridge track and field, one of our goals was to ensure fans were able to experience the complete meet environment," explained Sioux Falls meet director Gene Brooks.
Developed as a separate venue, the Lillibridge track allows several events to take place all in one general area. Whether fans are in attendance to see the one mile run, or javelin event, USF's track allows for the viewing of multiple events in a single visit, as field events are conducted within the track's lawn inside of the oval.
Size was also a factor USF considered when building the Lillibridge track and field.
"The benefit of a nine lane track versus the standard eight lanes is big, specifically when hosting larger meets such as this weekend," said Brooks. "It plays a significant role in the potential participants in a meet. If possible, you'd rather not have to turn away entries."
The Lillibridge track and field currently consists of nine lanes, two high jump areas, two discus cages, two shot rings, two javelin runways, four long jump pits, and four pole vault boxes.
Defined by its size and design, which includes the surface material found at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., USF's home track is an ideal site for both elite training and the hosting of regional/championship style meets. Most recently, Lillibridge hosted the 2011 NCAA Division I Summit League Conference Championship.
