University of Sioux Falls head men's soccer coach Paul Bennett confirmed earlier today the signing of 13 student-athletes who have chosen to continue their academic careers and join the Cougar men's soccer team for the 2012 season.

Featuring six South Dakota natives, including local standouts Derek Granum (Roosevelt), Jake Moir (Harrisburg), and Garrett Reta (Brandon Valley), the double-digit recruiting class represents a total of six states.

Today's signees add seven midfielders, three defenders, two forwards, and one goalkeeper to the 2012 roster.

"We're really excited about how this recruiting class is shaping up. We're not completely done yet, but we see a great deal of potential in this initial group," said head coach Paul Bennett.

USF enters its first full season as a full fledge member of the NCAA DII this fall and will compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which does not sponsor men's soccer.

However, the Cougars have agreed to become an affiliate member of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in men's soccer.

USF joins a conference that has accounted for nine men's soccer national championships from current or former members.

"Acknowledging the tough schedule we face this fall in GNAC conference play, as well as very good non-conference competition, we needed to improve the overall quality of our team from top to bottom and we think we've done that with this group," said Bennett.

Most recently, the GNAC saw two men's soccer teams finish in the top 11 of the nation. Simon Fraser, who was also in their final year of transition to the NCAA DII, posted an 18-0-1 record and represented the GNAC as the No. 1 ranked NCAA Division II team in the nation in the 2011 final regular-season poll, while Seattle Pacific ended its season ranked No.11.

The Cougars capped the 2011 season winning four of their final six contests to post a record of 7-9-1.

"We feel all of these guys have the potential to contribute right away in some capacity and were just excited to have them in this fall," said Bennett.

USF opens the 2012 season at home Sunday September 2nd, when they host William Jewell College at the USF Sports Complex. The game is set for a 3p.m. start.
