John Bunkers John Bunkers, a three sport letterman, reached the pinnacle of his collegiate athletic success in 1957 when he was named College Athlete of the Year for his fine contribution he made to Sioux Falls College athletics through his leadership, cooperation, teamwork, and scholastic achievement. John’s competitive heart inspired countless athletes for nearly four decades. From 1957-1963, John taught health and physical education classes and coached football, basketball, and track in Marion, S.D., leading the boys’ track team to a state title in 1959. On the heals of his track coaching success in Marion, John accepted a teaching and coaching position at O’Gorman High School where he served as the assistant football and basketball coach and was instrumental in starting a track program from 1963-1965. John acquired a master’s degree in education, which led him to Menno to serve as principal from 1965-1968. However, John missed the daily contact with students and chose to return to teaching and coaching. From 1968-1983, John was the head football, head track, freshmen basketball, and Legion baseball coach in Fulda, Minn. As football coach, John’s overall record was 117-59-2, and he was named the District 8 Coach of the Year in 1971. His coaching track accounted for 10 Tri-County Conference and 12 District 8 championships. John was honored as the Region Track Coach of the Year in 1971, 1973, and 1975, and in 1971 he was also named the Minnesota Track Coach of the Year. John served as the Minnesota High School Track Association president in 1981, was given the “Corky Bryce” award by the Worthington Globe in 1982, and in 1985 was the honorary referee for the Trojan Relays in Worthington, Minn. Throughout his professional tenure, John played on many summer baseball teams. In fact, his 50 and older team won the Old Timers World Series in Mesa, Ariz., in 1994 and 1995. Family: Wife- Sally |
