USF Places Nine on College Fanz 2009 All-American Team

Sioux Falls, SD - The University of Sioux Falls football team continues to garner post season accolades, this time nine Cougars were named to the 2009 College Fanz NAIA Football all-American team.


Former USF defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell was named Assistant Coach of the Year, senior quarterback Lorenzo Brown (Bristol, Conn.) was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year and senior defensive back Trevor Holleman (New Holland, S.D.) was named Defensive Player of the Year.


This year Brown led the Cougars to a perfect 15-0 season and their second consecutive NAIA national championship to cap a 29-0 career as a starter at USF. Brown threw for 3,221 yards and 40 touchdowns while rushing for 844 yards and 16 additional touchdowns on his way to being named the NAIA Player of the Year.


Holleman was a leader on the nation’s No. 1 scoring and total defensive unit, recording 62 total tackles, eight tackles for a loss, seven interceptions, 14 pass deflections, two forced fumbles and one blocked kick.


Joining Brown and Holleman as a first team all-American is offensive linemen TJ Wendt (Harrisburg, S.D.) and Kyle Staudt (Charles City, Iowa) and defensive lineman Mike Hartley (Rapid City, S.D.). Wendt and Staudt anchored an offensive line that only gave up 14 sacks in 15 contests and paved the way to the most rushing yards in school history. Hartley made 23.5 tackles, 11 for a loss, four sacks, two pass deflections, and two fumble recoveries.


Senior running back Ryan Lowmiller (Crystal Lake, Ill.) earned a spot on the second team as did freshman kicker Braden Wieking (Sioux Falls, S.D.). Lowmiller rushed for 1,487 yards in 2009, averaging seven yards per carry, and scored 21 times on the ground. Through the air Lowmiller was the fourth leading receiver for the Cougars, gaining 258 receiving yards and scoring one touchdown.


Wieking hit 13 of 17 field goals with a long of 42 yards in his first year of varsity football. He connected on a school record 100 of 101 point-after-touchdown attempts. The Sioux Falls native also handled punting duties this season and was named the 2009 NAIA National Championship Game Most Valuable Offensive Player.


Senior tight end Scott LeBrun (Dell Rapids, S.D.) and junior linebacker Dominic Studzinski (Fort Atkinson, Wisc.) received honorable mention all-American mention. LeBrun emerged as a receiving threat this season for USF, catching 24 passes for 400 yards and eight touchdowns. Studzinski was USF’s leading tackler with 64 total stops, 16 tackles for a loss, 8.5 sacks, five quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Studzinski was named the 2009 NAIA National Championship Defensive Most Valuable Player.
