Sioux Falls, SD - Kalen DeBoer has resigned as the head football coach at the University of Sioux Falls to become the offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill. Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will be promoted to interim head coach and will be included in the pool of candidates in the search that will begin immediately.

“The University joins me in being very appreciative of everything Kalen has done for USF as a player, assistant coach and head coach” said athletics director William Sanchez. “He has taken the football program to the highest level possible in the NAIA and he will be greatly missed by everyone here."

During his five year tenure as head coach DeBoer guided the Cougars to undefeated national championship seasons in 2006, 2008 and 2009 and compiled a 67-3 overall record. USF also made a national championship game appearance in 2007. Every year DeBoer coordinated one of the best offenses in the country and coached two quarterbacks to NAIA Player of the Year awards. DeBoer was an all-American wide receiver on USF’s 1996 national championship team and served as the USF offensive coordinator from 2000-2004, taking over as head coach the following season.

SIU is a NCAA Division I FCS institution that has won two straight Missouri Valley Conference championships in head coach Dale Lennon’s first two seasons. The 2009 season saw the Saluki’s post an 11-2 record on their way to the quarterfinal round of the FCS playoffs and a No. 6 ranking in the final polls.

The new coach will guide the Cougars through one more season at the NAIA level and then face the challenge of introducing USF football to NCAA Division II during the 2011 season.
