Sioux Falls, SD - The University of Sioux Falls men’s and women’s track and field team started the 2010 indoor season with a strong showing at the Minnesota State University open meet on Saturday, January 9th.

Three Cougars provisionally qualified for the NAIA National Meet on the men’s side. Junior Jon Ryan’s (Watertown, S.D.) long jump of 22 feet, 9.75 inches won the event and was a provisional mark, as he was one of six Cougars to jump over 21 feet. Sophomore Colin Koth’s (Sioux Falls, S.D.) 49.73 second 400 meter dash placed him second overall and was a provisional qualifying mark. Sophomore Brady Velgersdyk (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was the final provisional qualifier for the Cougars, winning the 600 meter race in 1:22.36. A provisional qualifying mark allows an athlete to go to the national meet if the allotted slots are not filled by automatic qualifying marks.

The women had a slew of great performances, including two provisional qualifying marks. Freshman Kendra Knight (Mitchell, S.D.) finished second in the 400 meter dash, stopping the clock at 59.95 seconds, a provisional mark. The 4x400 team was the other provisional time, as Knight teamed with freshman Leah Wensmann (Aberdeen, S.D.), sophomore Becca Bedard (Rapid City, S.D.) and sophomore Krissy Aesoph (Highmore, S.D.) to run 4:03.64. Sophomore Sarah Gilbert (Papillion, Neb.) won the high jump with a mark of 5 foot, 2 inches and also won the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 11.5 inches. Senior Marissa Schouten (Hawarden, Iowa) was the other event winner on the women’s side, taking the 5,000 meter race in 21:18.67.

The Cougars will compete next at the University of Minnesota open in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday, January 16th.
