Sioux Falls, SD - The University of Sioux Falls men’s and women’s track and field team competed on Saturday, January 16th at the Dordt Indoor Invitational against six other Great Plains Athletic Conference institutions and Dakota State University. Both the men’s and women’s squad performed admirably as several athletes broke school records and automatically qualified for the NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Meet. The Cougar men had three event winners and one provisional qualifying mark. Andrew Ellsworth and Caleb Coffee both pole vaulted to a mark of 15 foot, 1 inch. Ellsworth had already provisionally qualified, but it was Coffee’s first time hitting that height this season. Other event winners were Brady Velgersdyk in the 400 meter with a time of 50.77 seconds and Austin King leaped 22 feet, three inches in the long jump to take the event. Nine other athletes were either second or third in their event, including Dan Whipple’s shot put of 45.2 feet. It is Whipple’s first ever collegiate meet.
The women’s team also yielded many exciting performances, including one automatic qualifying mark, two new school records and four first place efforts.
